(1) Why is chaff carried away while grains fall straight down during winnowing?
Answer: Grains are heavy, so they fall straight down. Chaff and other debris are lighter, so the wind carries them away.
(2) How does filter paper separate muddy water?
Answer: Filter paper has extremely microscopic pores. Water passes through these pores, while the insoluble soil particles remain on the filter paper.
(3) How is butter separated from buttermilk by churning?
Answer: Churning pushes the butter particles towards the edges of the vessel. The particles stick together and form a large lump. Since butter is fatty and light, it floats on the buttermilk and can be separated.

(1) A finer sieve is used to separate bran from flour.
Answer: Flour particles are smaller than bran particles. The small flour particles pass through the fine holes, while the larger bran particles remain on the sieve.
(2) Alum helps soil particles in muddy water settle more quickly.
Answer: Dissolved alum particles stick to the soil particles. The combined particles become heavier and settle at the bottom more quickly.
(3) Salt can be obtained from seawater without burning extra fuel.
Answer: Seawater is kept in salt pans under sunlight. Solar heat evaporates the water and leaves the salt behind. Therefore, no extra fuel needs to be burnt.

(1) Separating pieces of iron from non-magnetic waste
Answer: Magnetic separation should be used. This method uses the magnetic property of iron. A magnet attracts the iron pieces but does not attract the non-magnetic waste.
(2) Salt solution kept in sunlight
Answer: The quantity of water will gradually decrease because it changes into vapour. Finally, solid salt will remain in the saucer. This process is called evaporation.
Salt solution + Sunlight → Water vapour + Solid salt
