(3) For which type of mixture is the filtration method useful and how?
Answer
The filtration method is useful for a mixture of a liquid and an insoluble solid. The mixture is passed through a strainer, a fine sieve or filter paper. The insoluble solid particles remain on the filter, while the liquid passes through its tiny pores.
Example: Muddy water can be filtered using filter paper.
(4) How will you separate sawdust mixed in a container of water?
Answer
Sawdust is an insoluble solid. Therefore, it can be separated from water by filtration.
Pour the mixture through a strainer, fine sieve or filter paper. The sawdust will remain on the filter, while the water will pass through it.
(5) While working, a carpenter finds that iron nails have mixed with sawdust. Which different methods can the carpenter use to separate them? Which of those methods is the easiest?
Answer
1. Handpicking
The carpenter can pick out the iron nails from the sawdust by hand.
2. Magnetic Separation
The carpenter can move a magnet over the mixture. The iron nails will be attracted towards the magnet and separated from the sawdust.
Magnetic separation is the easiest method because iron nails are attracted towards a magnet, while sawdust is not.
